Fabric

There are many wonderful new fabrics out there which can make fantastic lampshades, but you may experience a powerful magnetic pull back towards those older classic fabrics which are just no longer available. Look at the current popularity of vintage collections of the famous fabric names… And how frustrating is it, that you can’t get hold of others you’ve known and loved!

We sometimes manage to find some interesting fabrics which have gone off the shelves and which work as a lampshade but consequently have limited amounts of those fabrics. So if you want a different size or shape using a fabric on a lampshade in the lampshade shop, get in there quickly before stocks run out!

We have used many different makes of fabric – all the big names and little ones – who design and produce the sort of fabrics we like. We’ve made lampshades using beautiful Sanderson, Liberty, GP and J Baker, Mulberry, Jane Churchill, Clark and Clark, Prestigious, Monkwell, Windham, Moygashel, Greeff, Amy Butler, Nina Campbell, Collier Campbell, Designers Guild, John Lewis, Blendworth fabrics amongst others…

Occasionally, good quality re-homed vintage material will be used.

Fabrics are always chosen to achieve the best lampshade effect with the fabrics used – utilizing the most attractive parts of particular fabric designs. Wastage is a problem….but the results are worth it.

As a consequence, the lampshade you receive may not be exactly as shown in the photos. The pattern may be positioned slightly differently, but rest assured, not in a way to detract from the overall appearance of the shade you can see.

Making Lampshades

Painted Horse Design lampshades are all hand made in the UK. They are fabric covered and backed with flame retardant laminate. The fabric is stuck onto the backing and then the metal lampshade rings are rolled along the edges which are then carefully rolled over and tucked in to give a neat and firm edge. The whole process takes quite a bit of time…

For larger shades we use extra rigid laminate. We also make double sided lampshades so you can have fabric on the inside of your shade too which can be really good with pendant lampshades.

It takes quite a while to make a lampshade which has a really good finish and a lampshade that will last. At Painted Horse Design that’s what you’ll get.

Quality

Every lampshade in the painted horse design shop is handmade and carefully checked before it is sent out. Finish and durability are very important as you may want to use this lampshade for a long time. (Dismantling one of our lampshades is not so easy – which must be a good sign!)

This is our business and we want total customer satisfaction. We want to keep all our customers coming back and recommending us. We need and welcome feedback and your suggestions and if there is any glitch with any part of the process, we really want to know about it. Consequently if there is anything we could do better, please let us know because we want to get things right for you.

The Lamp Base

It can be a struggle finding the right lamp base that works with the shade. I know…and sometimes what you predict will work just doesn’t and what you thought wouldn’t – looks great! Its a matter of proportion, fashion and your own vision about what’s going to look good in your room. Forget the rules. We’ve all got different tastes and views about decoration and colour in our homes so its really worth experimenting and perhaps visiting a High Street department store armed with a tape measure to see what styles, sizes and combinations of shades and bases you like.

If you need to buy a lamp base, there are fabulous posh lamp bases around and you can also look in antique and vintage shops. If you don’t want to spend much, some cheap wooden and pot lamp bases can be transformed with interesting paint. Watch out for lamp bases in charity shops and of course eBay can offer some great bargains.

What Light Bulb To Use

Incandescent bulbs are being phased out.  UK customers will probably have a supply of 40, 60 and 100 watt bulbs and want to use them. You can use 40 watt bulbs on small lampshades, 40-60 watt are fine with medium size shades and you can usually happily use a 100 watt bulb on a large shade or standard lamp.

Energy saving bulbs use fewer watts than traditional bulbs when producing the same amount of light. Now its the ‘lumen output’ rather than wattage which tells you the brightness of bulbs. This is good news for lampshade lovers as the heat output is much less and there is little risk of heat fade.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are the most commonly used energy saving light bulbs and they use 60-80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Make sure your energy saving light bulb is a compatible length and diameter for use with your shade – some are long and might be seen over the top of your lampshade!
